Siegel Stars vs Riverdale, Tuesday March 17, 2009
Stars Fall Short
Final Score: 10 - 15
Tuesday's match against the Riverdale Rugby Club promised to be an exciting affair. Several key players were back from injuries for the stars, and spirits were high. "Smash Mouth" rugby was played by both teams. Riverdale drew first blood with an excellent penalty play by their BIG center. The Warriors added two more trys before the half. So at the break the score stood at 15-0 in favor of the home team. Siegel wasted several opportunities inside the 10m line, where stiff defense by Riverdale and bad ball presentation left the Stars with nothing to show for their efforts. The second half, however, was a different story. With several subs playing due to first half injuries, the Siegel boys got things in gear. Fine pack play by the Stanford twins, Scott and Tripp moved the ball down field and kept Riverdale on their heels. Relentless pressure and a great head's up play enabled first year wing Jacob Coffey to scrap his way into the try zone for his first try. The conversion attempt by Scott Stanford fell just short. Siegel enthused by the 5 points kicked it into gear and worked the ball to Coffey again, and he worked his way to paydirt for his second score. Siegel continued to apply pressure, but could not add the tying score and at the final whistle the Stars fell just short 15-10. Although the score was in favor of their opponents, there was much to be excited about on the Siegel sidelines. "Our pack played great!" remarked Coach D. "I was especially proud of our new players. They are really coming around." He added. Along with the Stanford boys, coaches had high praise for Props, John McKinney and Matt Owens along with first year, flanker Robert Beilfuss, who won "Man of the Match". The coaching staff had high praise for first year scrumhalf, Josh Staedt who led the team like a veteran. "Our backline just keeps getting better. Tyler Ramsey, Jacob Campbell and Matt Tucker are all finding their rhythm, and the second half of the season looks bright", said Coach Kelly. After Spring Break the Siegel Stars will face Oakland High School at SHS Stadium.

Siegel Stars vs Ravenwood Raptors, Tuesday March 3, 2009
New Faces in New Places
Final Score: 5 - 24
The 2009 Siegel Stars Men's Rugby team has a new look this season, and it's not new jerseys. It is a host of new players and returners in new positions. The opener against Ravenwood seemed to be a chess match at first. Both teams drove deep in the opponents end but could not put one in. Late in the first half, the Raptors inched one across the try line for 5 points. The conversion kick sailed wide. So at half the score stood 5-0. After an encouraging half time speech by Coach D. The boys were ready to go another 30. "I told them just to relax and have fun." remarked Coach D. "Just do your job," He added. The second half, however, was all Ravenwood. Senior scrumhalf, Sam Bickford scored the only try for the Stars on a 50m weak side move. On that play Bickford picked the ball up charged to his left and out ran all defenders to the goal. Conversion kick by Scott Stanford was just wide. The rest of the second half saw wholesale substitutions by the Siegel coaching staff. The Stars would end up playing EVERY player suited up. "This is where we are. Not where we will be!", exclaimed Coach D after the match. "We will get better." And with those words the opening match of the 2009 season was in the books. The Siegel staff awarded senior, inside center Jacob Campbell the game ball and title of "Man of the Match" for his hard charging, "no quit" effort in the home loss. Next up for the Siegel Stars is Nash Bash where they will face off with Penn B and Nobelsville.

Siegel Stars vs Coffee County Barbarians, Thursday January 22, 2009
Learning the Game
Final Score: 19 - 24
Anticipation was at a high level as the Siegel Rugby team prepared to step onto the pitch in Tullahoma on Thursday night. Having graduated 11 out of 15 A-side starters, the roster was wide open for anyone to step up, and step up they did. One big question was the position of scrumhalf. The scrummie for Thursday's match was set to be Senior, Sam Bickford. Bickford had a season of B-side under his belt, but was untested in an A-side contest. Untested, but totally ready. Bickford elated the coaches and fans with his play. Playing every minute of the scrimmage, he guided his team like a veteran. Aggressive defense and head's up play gave Bickford two tries on the night and two conversion kicks.
The pack did a good job controlling the tempo of the match. The loose forward trio of Austin Conner, Noor Shinawee, and "newbie" Tate Odom swarmed the Barbarians with reckless abandon. On one play, just outside the 22m line, Tate Odom executed a perfect weak side number 8 pickup and blasted his way into the try zone refusing to be denied. The backline attacked all night, with Jacob Campbell garnering praise from both coaching staffs. "Jacob has one gear, and its wide open!" Coach D. remarked. "He's a machine." he added. The backline saw more fine play from Cody Gartung and first year man Johnny Malesh. Along with these standout backs, the coaches were in high praise of Senior lock, Tripp Stanford and prop Derek Ekmanis. "We have a long way to go until we are match ready", said Coach Kelly after the match. He went on to say, "At least now we know how many of these boys want to play, and its ALL of them!" Although merely a scrimmage spirits were high and parent support was awesome. Final score: Barbarians 24...Siegel...19 S.M. Hornbuckle, Rugby Free Press
